Post-Operative Instructions

Follow-Up and Restoration

After your root canal is complete, you’ll need to see your general dentist within 3-4 weeks for a permanent restoration. This step is essential to protect your tooth and ensure long-term success

Numbness
Your lips, teeth, and tongue may remain numb for several hours after the procedure. Avoid chewing until the numbness wears off to prevent accidentally biting your cheek or tongue.

Mild Discomfort
It’s normal to experience some tenderness or soreness for a few days after treatment. This can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol), following the directions on the label.

Chewing and Eating
Avoid chewing or biting on the treated tooth until your general dentist has placed the final restoration (usually a crown or permanent filling). Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth in the meantime.

Oral Hygiene
Continue to brush and floss normally to keep the area clean. Good oral hygiene helps prevent infection and promotes healing.

Temporary Filling
If your tooth received a temporary filling, it’s normal for a small layer to wear away between appointments. If the entire filling comes out, please contact our office so we can replace it.

Swelling or Pain That Worsens
Slight swelling or discomfort is normal. However, call our office right away if you experience:

  • Severe pain or pressure lasting more than a few days
  • Noticeable swelling inside or outside your mouth
  • An allergic reaction (rash, itching, difficulty breathing)
  • A return of your original symptoms
